Kids Charity Quilt

Yeah, I finished this kids charity quilt over the weekend.  I had the 6.5 squares along with some yardage saved away for one of my boys and never did make anything with it but when Margaret's Hope Chest was looking for quilts I decided I needed to make something right away.  Pulled it out and started sewing.  This is finish number 3 for 2014 and no new fabric needed!

I pieced the back with the yardage in the box.  There was also enough for the binding.

Close up of the quilting.  I did loops with an orange thread.

I am calling this one Happy Dance!

Fabric Post and my WIP # 5

So far so good!  I can tell you this fabric fast has not been easy.  I have been tempted but have not bought any extra fabric.  Here is what I did buy and since I am working on the quilt and needed it to finish it - it was part of my exceptions.  My goal is to finish my WIP especially the ones from last year.

Moda Friendship Quilt

The blocks were all from stash and I made them last year.  I ran out of the grey Kona color so I needed more to finish up the set in triangles.  I have gotten the rows sewn together just need to sew up the extra blocks. This one is probably going to be close to 90 x 90.  So I knew I was going to need a back.  I had a 40% off for my LQS so I bought this for the backing. I will probably need to do some piecing on it as well since I didn't plan for how really big this one is going to be.

My exceptions for purchasing were for backs and background if needed.  That means I have to be working on them to buy them not just for something that I think I will need a back for.  That can be a very slippery slop!

I have been sewing from stash and making some progress.  All 80 blocks are done for the Badger Graduation quilt.  All the fabric came from stash.  I plan on raiding anything with black, red or grey for the back.  I have started on the rows.  I am really hoping to finish this one up in February yet!

I took this stack a fabric from a box I had been saving for about 12-13 years.  The stack to the left.

I made this quilt and working on finishing up the quilting.  I used almost all the fabric in the box too!  Simple sewing and I had this together in a night.  It is nice to know not everything has to take months to finish!

This quilt was not even on a to do list. I just decided I needed to sew a kids quilt for charity and get it finished so here is hoping for a Friday Finish.

I can tell you having to go to the quilt shop each month for Moda Club has been harder than I thought it would be.  Each month is a featured fabric with a fun project how to and then 20% off all Moda all the time.  Once she gets some of the new lines in - not sure that I can hold out and not buy.  I really like the line Color me Happy!  Yep - she is getting that one!

I am just happy I have not bought any extras while I have been in there at least 4 or 5 times!  Almost through February and based on what I have going I should not need any backings or backgrounds.  I have lots to sew through yet.  I can tell you my stash does not feel any light yet either.  I am keeping track of total yards I am using so next month I might have to report on that.

Good luck and linking up with Fabriciholics Anonymous at Making Rebecca Lynne, Let's Bee Social and WIP Wednesday.

Any Which Way Finish

I finished my Riley Blake Challenge Quilt and I even named it!  I don't name things often but I am calling this one Any Which Way.

I am really happy with how it turned it out too.  I can tell you that I would not have put these fabrics together myself and was really not sure what to do.  I had decided that I wanted to do large flying geese and that I would use all of the fabrics and just add white.  I did not want to buy any fabric for the challenge either and I didn't.

What I originally thought was my idea, I just didn't like.  So I kept moving them around until I liked what I was seeing. This is when the design wall or in my case a piece of batting pinned to the wall comes in really handy.  I had the general idea down and my younger so thought "that is pretty cool Mom, but you should put the fabrics in order"  I couldn't have agreed more on that note.  I did that and I loved it.  I can say this is the first time that I did anything like this and it was fun to do.There was some trial and error but the end result worked for what I had in my head.

Then came the quilting.  I started with the flying geese.  Then added the center.  That happens to be my favorite part too!

I loved doing that back and forth lines too.  I think I need a pillow made in this same design and quilting.

Then the large white triangles.  Those were a little big to get those lines as straight and even as I would like.  My FM foot I can not use a ruler either.  That will take some more practice yet.

Then I decided on small stippling.  in the rest of the areas.  While I was finishing it, I kept thinking of yellow as the binding and had a piece just big enough that worked.  I love the yellow binding.  I am normally either same color as the background or a dark color.  My other one I used navy.

This little quilt finished up at 31" x 33".  Kind of a weird dimension.  Not sure where this one will live yet but it makes me smile when I look at it.

WIP #4

Looks like I have missed a few weeks of posting for WIP.  I have had some good sewing progress and am itching to start something new too!  So here is the run down.

Been Working On:

1.  Riley Blake Challenge Quilt.  Finished quilting it and just hand sewing down the binding.  I will post this finish later this week. I really like the yellow binding!

2.  Badger Graduation Quilt- 50 blocks are done out of the 80.  I have the last 30 partially done.  I like working on this one when I just don't feel like thinking too much!

3.  Moda Friendship Quilt- Lots of progress on this one.  It is on the floor just waiting for the set in triangles and then to sew it up into a top.  Pretty sure this one is going to the longarmer!  It is big I think it is going to be about 90 x 90.  Not sure that I want to wrestle that one through my sewing machine and it would be nice to have it done sooner too.

Going to start Very Soon - 2 kids charity quilts

That first stack of fabric I have had for at least 10-15 years.  The stack was a kit and they are a 120 6.5 squares.  I was going to make a HST quilt back then for my youngest who is now 17!  Now I am just going to make a charm square quilt to get it done quickly.

The other stack was a quilt kit I won at a retreat a very long time again.  The pattern it came with is too many pieces and not wanting to do that.  I am not sure what I will do with this yet but I have a couple of easy ideas that I have been thinking about.  There are a lot of 1/4 yard cuts in that stack too.

These will be great kids charity quilts and I am pretty there is even enough for the backs.

I am linking up to Let's Bee Social and WIP Wednesday.  Enjoy the rest of your week and thanks for stopping.

February Finishing Goal

I can't believe it is the 7th already this week flew by with out much sewing going on.  I need to finish up my Riley Blake Challenge in the next week so I have to get a move on.

Here it is on the design wall.  I did get it basted and have started the quilting.  I have quilted inside all the of the fly geese units and now just need to do the background.  When I am not sure what to do, I procrastinate.  Have not worked on it in several days.  The design inside is from the Dot to Dot Craftsy Class.  It was a lot of stopping and starting but I love how they look.

I think I will sit down and just start and see what happens. I have had enough time to think and now need to do it.

So the goal is finished up with binding down.  I think I will hand stitch this one down too.

Last month I was one of the winners too!  I won 3 patterns from Green Fairy Quilts!  That is pretty cool!

I am linking up to February Goals for a Lovely Year of Finishes at Sew Bittersweet Designs.  Also going to link up at NTT and Let's Be Sew Social.

I will have to update my WIP list after the weekend since I am hoping to get lots done!  My time this week has been spent planning our summer vacation!  Can't complain about that at all!  We are planning to go to the Smoky Mountains and rent a cabin.  There are a lot of cabins to check out so hopefully I will finish that up this week and not be all over the internet every night checking them out.

Have a great week!
